Break down all the signs and symbols and social factors of a football club, and essentially, you have a religion.
The mass gatherings on the weekends, the idolisation of symbols and figures, the constant waiting for the next messiah to help bring back the holy grail (the championship), the anthems, the communal bonds, the nonsensical violence (community leaders always tell you not to, but the fanatics always think it's right to beat each other up for the sake of your 'religion').....and as you can see now - the 'missionaries' who preach their religion abroad.

So why do HKers support Liverpool or MU? It's the same question as why HK conversion to christianity is on such a steep rise.

Religion is providing the social bonds, the sense of community, the security of having a father-figure, because there is no other social structure in HK that provides that.

  2. i wonder why only football clubs can function like "missionaries", but not also other sports e.g. bastketball teams?

Good question. But i guess because football has the longest history and is the most globalised sport. They know how to spread their gloabl message, and preach the wonders of their sport. The next to have this appeal is probably basketball. And indeed, there have been NBA allstars coming to Hong Kong for exhibition matches just as there is now a mini premiership tournament.

However, the interest will never be the same because there just isn't the same kind of history with basketball teams than with football teams.

Also, in line with the usual american mentality. They just aren't that interested with the outside world!
